Not the least question about your new Website is where you will locate it. We offer you complete freedom in that regard, and can support the site on our own service or a system of your choice (within the capabilities of your system). To assist your selection we have |
compiled some crucial questions you will want to ask about a potential host company. In the general marketplace you have several choices of vendor, the most visible being between a free host, personal Web space, traditional and -- what we offer -- a low cost host. Here are the main differences: |
|
Traditional Web Host Cost is usually around +/-$1/day. For that you often get around the clock support, usually by someone who sounds product knowledgeable. You also receive a variety of products and services which are oriented toward handling your business at varying levels. |
Free Web Host Other people's ads (including pop-ups) may appear on your site. Often results in unprofessional appearance. Host usually strictly limits Web site size, bandwidth (visitors/month) and cgi access (programs to assist business). Yes, we can offer free hosting, but with no pop-ups! |
|
Personal Web Space
Offered by Internet Access Providers. Usually no email forms or
other cgi-based elements of a basic business, which often results
in unprofessional appearance. The host limits Web site size,
bandwidth (visitors/month) and cgi access. |
Low Cost Web Host Some have a "traditional" product mix robust enough for your needs. They may have similar support. Pick carefully to find one which is a successful "guerilla marketer" in this competitive market. A low cost host can be a perfect midpoint between the other three extremes. |
|
We are a low cost Web host reseller,so you get a great blend... traditional 24x7 up-time and functionality using highly capable hardware, guerilla marketer's pricing, plus our personalized application support. If we build your site, then you can obtain introductory free Web site hosting, too. or, you may purchase our low price Web host service separately in blocks of 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or 2 years at a time. At the core is service. We focus on high quality service because that's a particular "hot button" for us. Indeed, we want to be known for exemplary levels of customer support, so we select our hosting provision team carefully. We have established this program to allow your business a more natural, potential growth path without having to worry about breaking in a new host to do so. "What do I really need?" O.K. You've decided that a low cost Web host with our quality service is the best way to go. But with all those specs being thrown at you by each vendor, how do you compare one to another? You need the answers to three basic questions: 1) How much space is provided? A Megabyte is 1,024 Kb. To a lowly 35Kb page, that is a huge amount of space. And, frankly, a small start-up site easily fits inside a 5-Meg space. If you plan on staying very small, perhaps it's "all the space you'd ever need." So why get more? One store we worked with broke the 5-Meg size inside of three months. They're up to some 300 Megs now. Some companies will not allow additional space unless you buy their more expensive "commercial" space. Others simply charge you more for breaking the barrier. With us, it's "already there when you want it"... up to 1 Gb worth. In short, it's a no-extra-cost, built-in growth path. 2) How fast will the data go to my Web visitor's computer? That depends upon your Website's visitor. In our glossary, for bandwidth you will see that at a dial-up speed of 56 Kbps a 35 Kb page will take 11-12 seconds to download. That (or smaller!) is just about the ideal page size. You want people to start seeing usable text in about 11-12 seconds, or you risk losing them to another Web site. |
Cable and DSL are much faster, but not everyone has that. As a result, having many short pages in your site will be more effective for you than a few long ones. That's an easy design consideration, and should not impact your choice of hosts. What follows, however, will affect your choice... 3) How much information will the host system allow to be sent? You will see this described in typical hosting literature as 5, 10 or whatever amount of Gigabytes of "bandwidth" or "throughput" or "traffic." Our bandwidth example shows that a Megabyte is 1,024 Kilobytes. For a 50 Kb page, this means that just over 20 such pages can be sent per Mb. Using that size, and assuming that the average visitor looks at two pages, each Gigabyte translates to up to 300 Website visitors per day before additional costs are incurred. (Throw in just a little animation or audio, and you may easily cut that capacity in half.) The bottom line... You need a host which will -- in their basic price -- provide you with sufficient disk space and sufficient monthly bandwidth so that you will not incur additional costs. With computers it's not like bananas -- gigs don't spoil. So, rather then obtain just enough to get by, go for as much as you can get for as little as you can get it. You may never need it all. However, it is far better to be in that situation than to one day exceed your ISP's limits and either be shut off (we've actually seen some host companies do that!) or to incur unexpected premium-use costs. Beyond that, how robust is the package? The following comparisons are against a well known traditional Web host -- one whose level of support we happen to respect. The stats are as of the date this page was prepared in May., 2004, and are subject to change. As you can see here, we offer several times the capacity and bandwidth, plus several similar products, and all at a fraction of the price. For ease of comparison, let's use our 1-year package's monthly average cost against their monthly offerings, shown here as (a), (b) and (c). Our basic package is just over a 50% discount from their option (a), and an 88% discount from their option (c). If you use the whole 1 Gb of space, then $1 spent there costs under 3 cents here*: |
